The Heartland Series was established in 1984 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The program, which started as a series of five minute features about the wonder of the Great Smoky Mountains, continues to celebrate the people and the land of the entire Appalachian region.
Since 1984, over 1,100 short features have been produced, including over 130 half-hour specials. The series has become the most highly acclaimed locally produced program in the region's history. The Heartland Series accolades include four Emmy Awards, six Iris Awards (given by the National Association of Television and Program Executives), a silver and two bronze medals from the New York - International Film and Television Festival, and a Theodore Roosevelt Award for Best Outdoor Documentary. Video tapes of the series were selected by the U.S. government to portray the Appalachian culture in American embassies around the world.
