The Heartland Series was established in 1984 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Since 1984, over 1,100 short features have been produced, including over 130 half-hour specials. The series has become the most highly acclaimed locally produced program in the region's history. The Heartland Series accolades include four Emmy Awards, six Iris Awards (given by the National Association of Television and Program Executives), a silver and two bronze medals from the New York - International Film and Television Festival, and a Theodore Roosevelt Award for Best Outdoor Documentary. Video tapes of the series were selected by the U.S. government to portray the Appalachian culture in American embassies around the world.
