Interspersed in the landscape and along the boardwalk are quotations,
stories, and anecdotes illuminating fascinating facets of the
city's history. Exhibit "pieces" occur as two elements, secret
history stones and secret history pavers. The stones occur as
surprises within the landscape with text etched into native Tennessee
marble and limestone of varied shapes. These stones tell an interpretive
story in a short and concise format, leading the reader to pavers
located close by along the boardwalk path which are engraved with
names and titles connoting a sense of importance to our region's
history. Together, the secret history stones and boardwalk pavers
provide guests to the Volunteer Landing boardwalk the opportunity
to participate in a history "scavenger-hunt" that is both entertaining
and educational. For those traversing the Volunteer Landing boardwalk
at a walking pace, attention to these "secret history" modes are
drawn through slight alterations in the color and pattern of paving
at the exhibit's location.
